Abstract

Title: The Morphological Transformation of Sanggeng as the City Center Area in Manokwari

This study examines the morphological development of the Sanggeng area in Manokwari, the city center, between 1935 and 2024, particularly the Sanggeng area, which experienced significant growth driven by social, economic, topographical, and government policies. The study uses a descriptive, qualitative approach and field exploration, with synchronic-diachronic analysis, to understand the development of the city's physical structure over time. The results show that the morphological development pattern of Sanggeng changed from a linear pattern to a more complex grid, reflecting the rapid expansion of urban development. The main factors influencing development include colonial history, government policies, economic growth, and social and topographical dynamics. In addition, infrastructure development and increased public facilities support improvements in facilities and connectivity in this area. Overall, the development of Sanggeng's urban morphology reflects a shift from a simple city to a more structured activity center, allowing for the understanding of the city center's development pattern.
