Title: From Complexity to Clarity: Improving Usability and Security in Vertical Church Planning and Operations in Taiwan
As a vertical church in the modern era, Tamkang Church in Taiwan adopts a universal design approach to create an inclusive and welcoming worship space for people of all backgrounds. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a case study approach, this research analyzes the application of three universal design principles: simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, and tolerance for error. The analysis shows that clear zoning, intuitive vertical circulation, and signage and symbols throughout the church support ease of orientation. In terms of safety, stairs and ramps are equipped with handrails, and evacuation routes meet accessibility standards. However, some shortcomings remain, particularly regarding facilities for visually impaired users, such as the lack of braille indicators on walls, floors, and elevators. Overall, Tamkang Church demonstrates how universal design can be implemented to promote well-being, equality, safety, and comfort without diminishing the building's sacred character.
