Abstract

This research aims to explore the use of anthracite coal as an alternative material in jewellery making. Anthracite coal has distinct physical characteristics, such as a deep black colour, natural lustre, and high density and hardness. The core issue addressed in this study is how the exploration process, by adding chemical materials such as epoxy resin and polymeric thermoplastics, can enhance the quality of anthracite coal for use in jewellery. The objective of this study is to examine the potential and material characteristics of anthracite coal for use in jewellery product design. The research was conducted using a design-by-doing method, involving hands-on experimentation at the Legam Jewellery studio. The results indicate that the proportions of materials, forming techniques, and heating methods significantly affect the final material quality, in terms of both structural strength and visual appeal. The final design is a minimalist jewellery set with circular forms and textures tailored to young users' preferences. The study concludes that anthracite coal has significant potential as a jewellery material, adding value to abundant natural resources. The benefits of this research include advancing knowledge of alternative materials, fostering growth in the creative industry, and empowering communities through innovative jewellery products.
